Eczema is a Western medical term referring to a commonly observed allergic inflammatory skin condition. Eczema is characterized by itching polymorphic lesions of symmetrical distribution, repeated occurrences and the tendency to develop into a chronic condition. Eczema can be localized or can cover the entire body. It occurs regardless of the season of the year or age of the patient. Patients congenitally susceptible to allergic reactions are most commonly affected.
The acute manifestation is differentiated as Wind-Damp-Heat. The invading wind obstructs the Wei Qi and Damp Heat is retained in the skin or Damp Heat invades the lungs and the lungs cannot control the skin.
The chronic variety is linked to Blood deficiency. The skin becomes thick, dry, itchy and cracks. Blood deficiency may cause Internal Wind making the skin problem worse.
